Deities of Nepal III: Lores and Legends
Introduction
In Nepal, deities live with and among us. They take on many different forms and shapes from Hindu, Buddhist and indigenous religious beliefs, but are recurring features across various spiritual and cultural traditions, where the divine is seen as an active, present force rather than a distant entity. They are part of the very fabric of our lives and are deeply rooted in our landscapes, cultures, and beliefs.
Nepal’s long history of coexistence and contestations between a multitude of cultural, religious and ethnic communities has helped foster a vast body of lore—the stories, knowledge, practices, rituals and traditions that carry the collective memory of a people. Present in scriptures, legends, myths, and folk traditions, our lore shapes how we relate to one another, to nature, and to the divine.
The third iteration of the Deities of Nepal series explores how our lore and legends shape our visions of the divine, revealing layers of memories and meanings. Through these narratives, the exhibition will allow viewers to engage with a distinctive character of Nepali art and foster a dialogue between past and present, bringing forward stories that remain relevant today.
Exhibition Concept
Deities of Nepal III: Lore and Legends centers legends, myths, and folk tales and legends that keep our deities rooted in their cultural and communal contexts, rather than reduced them to mere décor. The exhibition decenters western art historical categories and gives primacy to the indigenous systems of knowledge from which art and artistic practices emerge in Nepal. It highlights the central role of art in our cultures and heritage. Viewing artists as lore keepers and creators, the exhibition engages with contemporary issues such as consumerism, environmental degradation, coexistence, and gender roles. It invites artists to seek divine inspiration to articulate new futures built upon a remembered past. For visitors, the exhibition is an invitation to not just look at the gods, but to listen to their stories and help build the better worlds they point us towards.
Exhibition Components
The exhibition is anchored around three major curatorial themes that are outlined below:
I. The formative narratives of the Kathmandu Valley
This section explores the legends and myths of the Kathmandu Valley—from its origin as an ancient lake to its transformation into an urban landscape. Through diverse artistic styles, this section asks how these legends and myths continue to shape our relationship with the valley.
Examples of formative narratives: The story of Manjushree draining the valley; the origin of Swayambu Stupa, Bouddha Stupa, Pashupati Nath Temple, Chagu Narayan Temple and other sacred sites within the valley; stories from the Swayambhu purana, etc.
II. Karuna as a way of being
This section examines the ultimate convergence of lore and legends into the festivals, jatras and rituals that animate and bring together communities. It explores how a deep sense of karuna, compassion, has allowed people to flourish upon these lands.
Examples of legends: Stories of the earth mother, stories of Bunga Dyah, the story of Indra Jatra, the story of Kumari Jatra, the story of Biske Jatra, etc.
III. Nature and our sacred landscapes
This section explores deities who exist in nature and the folklore that animates them. They are the gods that live in situ with us and allow for the possibility of a direct experience with the divine. Rooted in a culture of environmental stewardship, where the protection of a forest or a river is a religious duty, we explore their gradual erasure and resilience amid the climate crisis and the loss of indigenous lands.
Examples of folklore: Epic stories and literary works from the Ramayana, Mahabharta, like Jayadeva’s Gita Govinda or Vayuduta of Kalidasa; folk tales on sacred places, caves, ivers, forests, mountains, shamans and deities, the story of earth deities, the story of a landscape, stories of divine intervention.

Each artist can submit a maximum of 3 artworks with a concept note not exceeding 150 words for each work.

Kindly attach high-resolution photos (not more than 5 MB in size) of each artwork. Each file must be named after the title of the artwork in TIFF/JPG/ JPEG/ PNG format.
Selection Criteria will be based on over all concept and theme of the exhibition, balanced representation of the different genre of the arts, and space available. Final selection of the artworks will be at the discretion of a selection committee.
नेपालका देवीदेवताहरू III लोककथा र किंवदन्तीहरू
परिचय
नेपालमा देवीदेवताहरू हामीसँगै र हाम्रौ बीच नै बस्छन् । हिन्दू, बौद्ध तथा स्थानीय धार्मिक विश्वास अनुसार उनीहरूले विभिन्न रूप र आकृतिहरू धारण गर्दछन्। यद्यपि, तिनीहरू सबै आध्यात्मिक र सांस्कृतिक परम्पराहरूमा पुनरावृत्त हुने तत्व हुन्। जहाँ दैवी शक्तिलाई टाढाको शक्ति नभई एक सक्रिय र वर्तमान शक्तिको रूपमा हेरिन्छ। देवताहरू हाम्रो जीवनकै हिस्सा हुन् र हाम्रो प्रकृती संस्कृति र आस्थासँग गहिरो संग जोडिएका छन् । विभिन्न सांस्कृतिक, धार्मिक र जातीय समुदायहरूबीच सहअस्तित्व र द्वन्द्वको लामो नेपालको इतिहासले समृद्ध लोकपरम्पराको निर्माण गरेको छ जस्मा रहेका कथा, ज्ञान, अभ्यास, संस्कार र परम्पराहरूमा हाम्रा स्मृतिहरु पनि छन्। यसमा रहेका शास्त्र, दन्त्यकथा, मिथक तथा लोकपरम्पराका कथाहरूले हामीलाई प्रकृति र दिव्य शक्तिसँग सम्बन्ध गाँसिदिन्छन्। नेपालका देवीदेवताहरू श्रृंखलाको यो तेस्रो संस्करणले हाम्रा लोककथा र किंवदन्तीहरूले आस्था प्रतिको दृष्टिकोण कसरी विकास भएकोछ भन्ने देखाउँछ साथै स्मृति र अर्थका विभिन्न तहहरू उजागर गर्दछ। यी कथाहरू मार्फत, प्रदर्शनीमा दर्शकलाई नेपाली कलाको विशिष्ट चरित्रसँग जोड्ने र अतीत तथा वर्तमानबीच संवाद गर्ने अवसर प्रदान गर्दछ ।
प्रदर्शनीको अवधारणा
नेपालका देवीदेवताहरू III लोककथा र किंवदन्तीमा देवीदेवताहरूलाई केवल सजावटका बस्तुको रूपमा सीमित नगरी ती देवीदेवताहरू सांस्कृतिक र सामाजिक रुपमा गहिरो संग जोडिएका कथा, मिथक र किंवदन्तीहरूमा केन्द्रित गरिएकोछ। यस प्रदर्शनीले पश्चिमी कला इतिहासलाई हाम्रो सोचबाट विस्थापित गर्दै नेपालको कला र यस्को अभ्यास अनि ज्ञानलाई प्राथमिकता दिएको छ। हामीले हाम्रो संस्कृति र सम्पदामा कलाको महत्वपर्ण भूमिकालाई प्राथमिकता दिएकाछौ। कलाकारलाई कथा संरक्षक र सर्जकका रूपमा हेर्दै, यसले समसामयिक समस्या, वातावरणीय क्षति, सहअस्तित्व र लैङ्गिक भूमिकाजस्ता मुद्दाहरूलाई समेट्ने प्रयास गरेकाछौं। हामी कलाकारहरूलाई दिव्य प्रेरणाबाट प्रेरित भइ नयाँ भविष्य निर्माण गर्न आह्वान गर्दछौं। दर्शकका लागि, यो प्रदर्शनी केवल देवताहरू हेर्ने मात्र नभई उहाँहरूको कथा सुन्ने र उहाँहरूले देखाउनभएको राम्रो संसार निर्माणका लागि प्रेरितहुने अवसर पनि हो ।
प्रदर्शनीका अवएवहरू
प्रदर्शनी तीन प्रमुख विषयगत खण्डहरूमा आधारित छः
क. काठमाडौं उपत्यकाका कथाहरू
यो खण्डमा काठमाडौं उपत्यकाको उत्पत्ति र प्राचीन तालबाट शहरमा रूपान्तरण सम्बन्धी मिथक र कथाहरू पर्दछ। यी कथाहरूले आज पनि उपत्यका संगको हाम्रो सम्बन्ध कसरी स्थापित भएकोछ भन्ने बुझाउँछ ।

ख. करुणाः जीवन जिउने तरिका
यस खण्डले लोककथा र किंवदन्तीहरू कसरी पर्व, जात्रा र संस्कारमा परिणत भई समुदायलाई जोड्छन् भन्ने बझुउँछ। करुणा र दया को भावनाले यस भूमीलाई कसरी समृद्ध बनाएको छ भन्ने पनि देखाउँछ ।

ग. प्रकृति र पवित्र स्थल
यस खण्डमा प्रकृतिमा विद्यमान देवताहरू र तीसँग सम्बन्धित लोककथाहरू पर्दछ । यी देवताहरू हाम्री बीच प्रकृतिमै बस्छन् यसैले हामीलाई प्रत्यक्ष दिव्य अनुभव प्राप्तहुने गर्दछ। वन नदीनाला प्रकृति संरक्षणलाई यहाँ धार्मिक कर्तव्य मानिन्छ त्यस्तै हामी जलवायु संकट र आदिवासी भूमि गुम्दै जाँदा तिनको अस्तित्व र संघर्षलाई पनि आत्मसात गर्दछौं।

हामी कलाकारहरूलाई आफ्ना कथा, आध्यात्मिकता र देवतासँगको सम्बन्धमा गहिरिएर संलग्न हुन आग्रह गर्दछौं । तपाईहरुले सुनेका देखेका बुझेका शास्त्र, मिथक, लोककथा र परम्परालाई आफ्ना कलाकृति मार्फत पुनःव्याख्या गर्न अनुरोध गर्दछौं। हामीले समसामयिक समस्या, वातावरणीय क्षति, सहअस्तित्व, लैङ्गिक भूमिका जस्ता मुद्दाहरु मात्र नभइ अरु मुद्दाहरुलाई पनि कलात्मक अभिव्यक्तिमार्फत कसरी उठाउन सकिन्छ भन्ने तर्फ पनि सचेत रहन आग्रह गर्दछौं । साथै यी कथाहरुले हम्रा पहिचान, आस्था, स्मृति र समसामयिक जीवनलाई कस्तो रुप दिन सकिन्छ भन्ने बारे बुझ्न अनुरोध गर्दछौं ।
